Augusta, GA

Riverwalk / Augusta Common
Augusta used to be ravaged by devastating floods until 60 years ago when dams were constructed in 1913 to regulate the Savannah River's flow. After many more damaging floods, the levee was reconstructed in the 1930s as a barrier between the citizens of Augusta and the water. In the 1980s, community leaders realized the potential for transforming the riverfront into a thriving business and tourist center. It took an act of Congress to breach the levee and Riverwalk’s groundbreaking was held in 1986.

Today, the Savannah River is an integral part of Augusta, playing host to major water sports events, and providing entertainment for more than 200,000 residents in Georgia’s second largest city. It is a stunning area in downtown Augusta with dozens of attractions every year. From the spectacular July 4 fireworks show to the everyday leisure it offers, the Riverwalk is the perfect place for families of all sizes and ages to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Also on the Riverwalk is Fort Discovery! Fort Discovery is the only science center dedicated to exciting students across the nation about math, science, and technology. At Fort Discovery, math and science are not lifeless, boring subjects to be approached with skepticism. Instead, they are fascinating areas of knowledge which are great fun to explore!
